Since 2018, Terror Vault has transformed The San Francisco Mint into a new immersive horror production every Halloween. Part theater and part haunted house, each production is brought to life by more than 100 local performers and technicians, with NPU supporting the venue and operations behind the scenes. In 2026, the nightmare returns as SLASHED: Return to Hellville.
In our Event Horizon series, we often explore how venues become characters in a story. Few stories are as captivating or as terrifying as Terror Vault. Each fall since 2018 the historic San Francisco Mint transforms into a cinematic fright fest where live theater and horror collide. The production is the brainchild of filmmaker and drag legend Peaches Christ (Joshua Grannell) and theater producer David Flower.
Together, they have built an experience that now anchors San Francisco’s Halloween season, drawing tens of thousands of guests and earning national recognition. But Terror Vault has never relied on repeating the same formula. The story changes every year, giving returning audiences a new reason to step back inside The Mint.
Immersive Theater Meets Haunted House

The format of Terror Vault pulls from immersive theater and haunted houses in equal measure. Guests move through the production in small groups, encountering live characters across a series of connected scenes.
“It’s a mashup of immersive theater, horror storytelling, and old‑school haunted house scares,” says co‑creator Joshua Grannell. “Each year, we create a brand‑new 60–70 minute experience that places audiences right in the middle of a living horror movie. Guests don’t just watch the story unfold; they become part of it.”
This isn’t just another hall of jump scares (though there are plenty to be had). Terror Vault’s actors interact directly with guests, pull them into scenes, and reveal information that helps the group understand what is happening. Under Grannell and Flower’s creative direction, those interactions can be frightening, funny, grotesque, or proudly over-the-top, but each one plays a role in moving the story forward.
Why The Mint?

When scouting locations for their first production, Grannell and Flower wanted a venue with history and architectural character. The setting itself needed to contribute to the overall experience. They found all of that and more in The Mint. The 1874 landmark with long passageways, historic vaults, catacombs, and plenty of room for customizing sets offered the perfect backdrop.
“The Mint is a dream location,” says Grannell. “It’s atmospheric, eerie, and grand. The building itself feels alive; it already feels haunted before a single actor appears. Its architecture and massive scale allow us to transform it into an entire world, and every year we discover new ways to use its hidden corridors and spaces.”
That gives the creative team a rare starting point. A corridor can become part of the suspense. A vault can hold an entire scene. The route between rooms can feel as uncertain as the rooms themselves.
The building also gives Terror Vault room to grow beyond the main walkthrough. Bars, pre-show environments, performances, photo moments, and other experiences can occupy different corners of The Mint while still feeling connected to the larger world of the show.
At The Mint, the venue keeps showing through, and that makes the fiction feel a little more believable.
A New Nightmare Every Year

“Just know that every year is a brand new show,” Grannell reminds would-be visitors. “If you’ve been before, you haven’t seen Slashed. And if you’ve never been, this isn’t your average haunted house; it’s a wild, theatrical, and very San Francisco tradition.”
With the exception of the 2020 interruption, Terror Vault has followed through on that promise every Halloween since its 2018 debut.
Building a new show means much more than changing the costumes and giving last year’s rooms a fresh coat of paint. The team develops a new narrative, designs characters, writes scenes, builds environments, creates effects, and finds a new route through The Mint. Returning guests may recognize the building, but they cannot rely on knowing what waits around the next corner.
Past productions have moved from the occult horror of The Summoning and the cult-centered world of The Initiation to the science-fiction terror of Fatal Abduction and the witchcraft of HEXED. The genres change, but the format remains grounded in live performance and a story the audience has to move through.
That approach has earned Terror Vault recognition beyond the Bay Area. Its 2023 production, The Initiation, received the 2024 OSCARES Board of Directors Award for Established Haunt from the Haunted Attraction Association.
This constant reinvention keeps the attraction from becoming a museum piece. Terror Vault has history at The Mint, but it does not live in the past.
Supporting Local Artists and Crew

The world guests see in October takes a large local team to build.
Each Terror Vault production employs more than 100 performers and technicians. That includes actors, dancers, burlesque performers, costumers, set builders, lighting designers, makeup artists, and special-effects crews. Their months of work and rehearsals fill The Mint with details guests may only see for a few seconds as they move through the show.
For local artists, the production creates paid seasonal work on an unusually large canvas. For San Francisco, it keeps a major Halloween attraction rooted in the people who make art and live performance here.
NPU’s Role Behind the Screams
While Grannell and Flower write and produce the show, NPU handles venue logistics, marketing partnerships, corporate buyouts, and community outreach. Their support allows the creative team to focus on building the world of Terror Vault while NPU ensures the space is safe, accessible, and ready for thousands of guests every year. Working with NPU has helped Terror Vault scale from a scrappy experiment to a cornerstone of San Francisco’s Halloween season, attracting an estimated 70,000 attendees since 2018. Companies looking to host private or corporate buyouts of the haunt can work directly with NPU to secure exclusive nights or group experiences.
Grannell credits NPU for helping Terror Vault thrive: “NPU has been a fantastic partner since day one. From marketing to corporate buyouts to providing the space for us to work year‑round, they’ve helped us expand our reach and grow this into something that’s not only beloved by audiences but also sustainable as a business.”
What to Expect at “SLASHED” in 2026
For 2026, Terror Vault is heading into the bloody world of 1980s slasher films.
SLASHED: Return to Hellville begins with the disappearance of true-crime host Petra Sterling while she investigates a new wave of murders tied to the abandoned Fear Clinic. Guests are recruited to follow her clues into Hellville, where masked killer Darren Grieves and the mysterious Fear Engine are waiting.
The journey moves through an abandoned school, a haunted campground, a fraternity house, a forgotten video store, and other scenes inspired by the era of final girls, practical gore, and killers who never seem to stay dead. It is an homage, but it is still a Terror Vault story, with its own mystery and plenty left hidden until guests enter The Mint.
The larger experience also includes the returning Fang Bang vampire bar, the Wainwright Family Carnival VIP pre-show, and optional additions such as the Escape Tomb and Vault of Visions. After the season, limited lights-on tours will give guests a closer look at the sets, props, and effects without a masked killer breathing down their necks.
