Setting the Tone
When Facebook wanted its biggest holiday party to-date, a cookie-cutter space wasn’t even an option. Instead, they went way outside the box and (with NPU’s help) chose Pier 80, a massive cargo terminal on San Francisco’s waterfront, and trusted NPU to make it work.
The result? Over the span of two nights, thousands of employees stepped into Winterbook, a Game of Thrones-inspired celebration filled with roaming White Walkers, archery courses, dragons, and, of course, a towering Iron Throne. Guests explored with a medieval-style map that led them to the “Courtyard Well” bar, the Braavos-inspired “Hall of Facebook,” and “Healers Point.”
This wasn’t just a holiday party. It was a city-sized production that reset expectations for corporate events in San Francisco.
Why Pier 80 Works for Big Events

Pier 80 is by no means an event venue by default. It’s the only pier in San Francisco that can move cargo directly from ships to rail cars, making it the city’s largest break-bulk terminal.
That means scale, grit, and complexity. Securing a space like Pier 80 does not come easy. It requires relationships, logistics, and vision. That’s where NPU steps in.
We’ve built long-term partnerships with the City and the Port of San Francisco, who entrusted us to re-imagine Pier 80 as one of the largest event spaces in the city. Our extensive experience in the adaptive reuse of warehouses, shrines, and historic landmarks gave us the expertise to turn raw spaces like this into extraordinary holiday party venues.
How NPU Transformed Pier 80
Every system needed to host thousands of guests had to be engineered into a space originally designed for cargo:
- Security & Safety. From emergency egress routes to crowd flow planning, our operations team mapped and enforced safety standards at festival scale.
- Permitting & Compliance. We navigated city, port, and fire department requirements to transform an active industrial site into a temporary entertainment venue.
- Logistics & Access. With a site this size, we created detailed plans for load-in, load-out, parking, and shuttle transport to keep guests and staff moving smoothly.
- Amenities & Infrastructure. Everything from restrooms to heating, tenting, and food service was brought in and built to spec.
This project was the epitome of adaptive reuse. We took a pier built for ships, cranes, and rail cars and reimagined it as a sprawling, safe, and fully functioning venue for one of the largest corporate holiday parties San Francisco has ever seen. It’s exactly the type of transformation NPU was built for — making the impossible not just possible, but unforgettable.
Partnering With 1540 to Build Westeros
We teamed with 15|40 (1540), a minority- and woman-owned creative marketing agency known for crafting thoughtful, boundary-pushing experiences for global brands. Where NPU brought the venue, logistics, and operations, 1540 brought the vision and storytelling.
Their team of designers, producers, and builders imagined every detail of Winterbook – a massive Game of Thrones–inspired world that essentially transformed Pier 80 into Westeros. They designed towering set pieces and immersive environments, cast and costumed live performers, and created interactive activities that kept thousands of guests engaged across two full nights.
What It Looked Like

- World-building & scenic design. From medieval facades to fire-breathing dragons, every set piece was conceived to pull guests deeper into the fantasy.
- Character-driven immersion. Costumed actors as White Walkers, knights, and royalty roamed the event, turning the party into live theater.
- Interactive activations. Archery ranges, photo ops, and themed experiences gave employees hands-on ways to step into the story.
- Creative storytelling. The “Winterbook” theme was threaded across signage, wayfinding, and stagecraft, so every guest felt like part of the narrative.
Together, 1540 and NPU achieved what neither could alone. Their creative leadership imagined Westeros. Our operational expertise made it possible at scale. Side by side, we turned a working cargo terminal into one of the most ambitious corporate holiday parties San Francisco has ever seen.
Pier 80 Beyond Facebook

Pier 80’s story didn’t stop with Facebook. Since 2022, it has hosted several large-scale events, including the Portola Music Festival, which brings tens of thousands of fans to the industrial waterfront every September.
NPU has supported Portola every year with operations and infrastructure, proving Pier 80’s staying power as one of the most distinctive large-scale venues in the city. The festival will return in 2025.
Why Pier 80 + NPU
Pier 80 is singular in its scale, location, and raw character. It offers more than just room to build – it offers a canvas for legacy events. Paired with NPU’s operational excellence and creative collaborators, Pier 80 has become a stage where some of San Francisco’s most ambitious experiences have come to life.
