Sumo + Sushi, a wildly popular live showcase where ancient athleticism meets fine dining, is returning to San Francisco.

This incredible event made its Bay Area debut with NPU at the Palace of Fine Arts in 2022. Now, Sumo + Sushi is coming back to the Palace this November. Same iconic NPU venue, new dates, and the closest view of real sumo you can get stateside.

Let’s take a closer look at Sumo + Sushi, why it’s so successful, and why choosing the right venue is vital to that success.

What is Sumo + Sushi?

Framing itself as “the ultimate edu-tainment experience,” Sumo + Sushi blends live matches, learning, and amazing food. Renowned sumo legend Konishiki, the first non-Japanese-born wrestler to reach Ōzeki (sumo’s second-highest rank), hosts the event and adds deep personal insights throughout.

Guests learn the rules and history of the 1,500-year-old sport, including training and wrestling techniques, followed by real sumo bouts and a Q&A session with the wrestlers. There’s even a portion of the show where a select number of guests are invited to test their mettle by stepping into the ring and taking on one of the wrestlers themselves.

Why the Concept Works

Sumo + Sushi Palace of Fine Arts San Francisco

The show is very unique, but fairly simple at the same time. Everyone under the sun has at least heard of sumo, but very few Americans are actually familiar with the sport. Sumo + Sushi capitalizes perfectly on the mystery and curiosity around a sport steeped in history, all while eating gourmet food.

It also really connects well with a wide crowd. First-timers to the sport get to learn and experience it first hand for the first time, while more seasoned fans get to enjoy live matches without having to leave the city.

Even with hundreds in attendance, the structure of the show and seating layout makes everyone feel like they are ringside. The focus stays on respect, skill, and story, not empty hype. The result is a truly original and memorable experience for everyone in attendance.

Seamless Planning & Execution

Before anyone steps through the door, the teams at Sumo + Sushi and NPU have put deep thought and planning into the layout, seating flow, food & beverage distribution, and more to ensure that the guest experience is absolutely enjoyable.

  • Ticket types are tied directly to the seating sections, while exact seating within those sections is on a first-come, first-serve basis, helping to streamline entry for guests
  • Sightlines, aisles, and entry points are all mapped with care, assuring optimal crowd flow with no bad seat in the house
  • Clear run times and scheduled show breaks help pace the night and allow guests ample time for restroom breaks or drink refills without interrupting the show for others
  • Gourmet bento boxes are carefully prepared by local sushi chefs and are ready and waiting for guests when the time comes

No confusion, no crowd bottlenecks, no headaches. Sumo + Sushi runs seamlessly from start to finish.

Why the Palace of Fine Arts

Big shows like Sumo + Sushi need big space, height, and sightlines. The Palace delivers perfectly on all three.

  • 140,000 square foot main floor, with multiple points of entry and plenty of room for the custom stadium-style seating
  • 55 foot ceilings, with ample rigging points
  • The massive mezzanine allows for additional seating with clear views of the ring
  • Capacity easily scales up to 5,000 for the full venue

The grandeur of this historic venue also becomes as much a part of the show as the wrestlers themselves. With its Corinthian columns, intricate sculptures, arches, and the famous Greco-Roman rotunda, this San Francisco landmark sets the stage for extraordinary experiences.

Central to the beautiful Marina District near the Golden Gate Bridge, The Palace of Fine Arts also offers easy access to local transit and the waterfront.
